Society Garlic
Tulbaghia violacea

How to care for Society Garlic
Light. Full sun gives the most flowers. It grows in partial shade but flowers poorly there.
Water. Water regularly during the growing season, less while it flowers, and less again in winter. Established plants survive long droughts.
Soil and feeding. It prefers sandy, well-drained soil. In containers, give it bright sun and a mix such as Potting Soil.
Size. Leaves reach about 1 ft; flower stalks rise to about 2 ft. It spreads slowly by rhizomes but is not aggressive.
Pruning. Divide crowded clumps while the plant is dormant.
Problems to watch. No serious pests or diseases. Slugs and snails may chew the leaves; use Snail and Slug Bait following the label.
Good to know. The leaves smell of garlic when brushed, so keep it off busy walkways. It is moderately salt tolerant, deer resistant and handles light freezes.
