Giant ironweed is a perennial wildflower found in moderately dry to moist, well-drained areas, usually along the edges of wetlands and streams. It is very adaptable, but still not drought tolerant. It loves full sun to partial shade and will bloom from Summer through Fall. Because it is deciduous, it will die back during the winter time. It is part of the Aster family and is an excellent addition to your butterfly or mixed wildflower garden and will do best behind other plants. The 1 inch purple flowers attract many pollinators, and it is a larval host for the Spring Azure Butterfly.
